Mindfulness 1: Fundamentals

Spring Class – April 8-June 3, 2019, 7-9 pm @ Kazoo Books, includes Saturday Retreat.  Fee $260.

This 9-week introduction to mindfulness provides a powerful foundation for both new and seasoned meditation and mindfulness practitioners.  The course is based on the ground breaking program (The Mindful Way Workbook) developed by the leaders of Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy,  John Teasdale, PhD, Mark Williams, DPhil and Zindel Segal, PhD.

The mindfulness course has been tested in clinical trials around the world and shown to be highly effective in fostering emotional balance and resilience, as well as reducing  self-criticism, anxiety, stress, depression and other challenging emotions.

Each week focuses on different aspects of the doing mode (this mode includes our drive and threat emotional brain systems), so that you learn how to recognize this mode and learn to step out of it and into the mode of BEING characterized by open mindful awareness (this mode is the soothing and calming emotional brain system).  Outline  of course topics below:

Week 1 – Doing, Being and Mindfulness.  Emotional distress and why we get stuck

Week 2– Moving from living on “automatic pilot” to living with awareness and conscious choice

Week 3– Moving from relating to experience through thinking to directly sensing life

Week 4 – Moving from dwelling in the past and future to being fully in the present moment

Week 5 – Moving from trying to avoid, escape or get rid of unpleasant experiences to approaching it with interest

Week 6 – Moving from needing things to be different to allowing them to be just as they already are

Week 7 – Moving from seeing thoughts as true and real to seeing them as mental events that are conditioned by our life experience and may not correspond that accurately to reality

Saturday Retreat held between 7th and 8th week of the course held at Unitarian Church in Portage  9:30-3:30 pm.

Week 8 – Moving from treating yourself harshly to taking care of yourself with kindness and compassion

Week 9 – Planning a mindful future

Classes held at  Kazoo Books 2413 Parkview Ave. Kalamazoo, parking in rear of store off Book Alley,  7-9 pm once a week.
